This year Allstate asked me to customize something truly unique for their sweepstakes—a Polaris Slingshot. I jumped at the chance to do something a little—actually a lot—different than what I’ve done in the past.
If you haven’t seen or heard of the Slingshot yet, it’s in a category all its own. It’s not quite a traditional motorcycle and not quite a sports car. A sort of futuristic hybrid is how I’ve heard it described.
Polaris started with a reverse three-wheeler layout and then dropped in automobile-like controls. The Slingshot has a steering wheel as well as gas, brake, and clutch pedals. It also has two seats side by side.
A ride like no other
The Slingshot is definitely unlike anything I’ve ridden before and I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it at first. To be honest, I didn’t think I would like it. But I LOVED the ride. Fun doesn’t begin to describe it.
The Slingshot handles more like a sports car, which is cool, and really hugs the road. But the open cockpit reminds me of riding a traditional bike.
The experience is really hard to put into words. Check out this article for a detailed description and video of what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat.
The Paint Scheme
This customization came with a unique set of challenges and I approached the process quite differently than I do with traditional motorcycles. It was the first Slingshot we’ve done, so we had to get familiar with the vehicle before we just started ripping it apart.
Once we got it apart, we were pretty happy about the amount of bodywork that gave us a big canvas to work with. My inspiration was a cool sports car gone wild!
Since Allstate Motorcycle Insurance is a proud American company—as are Strokers Dallas and Polaris—I wanted to do a paint job that reflected American pride and be ultra-cool at the same time. I wanted the American flag paint job to have a distressed/weathered look, rather than paint a traditional American flag design.
The Slingshot is such a unique motorcycle and I love the way it turned out. I can’t wait to see the look on the winner’s face when they see the Rick Fairless custom paint job and customization up close. And wait until they drive it!
